During 22-26 January 2018, Mr. Asaf Hajiyev, PABSEC Secretary General, participated in the Winter Session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), held in Strasbourg. The Assembly elected its new President, Mr. Michelle Nicoletti (Italy) and 18 new PACE Vice-Presidents (Azerbaijan, Austria, Cyprus, Estonia, France, Germany, Ireland, Iceland, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovak Republic, Sweden, Turkey, United Kingdom and Ukraine). The members of the Assembly also elected Mrs.Dunja Mijatović (Bosnia and Herzegovina) for the post of the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe. Mr. Hajiyev had a meeting with Mr. Samad Seyidov, PACE Vice-President and discussed the ways of developing a future cooperation between the PABSEC and the PACE, both at political and administrative levels. Mr. Hajiyev also met with Mr. Sergey Antufiev, Acting Secretary General, Head of the IPA CIS Council Secretariat, and invited him to participate in the second meeting of the Secretaries General of the Parliaments of the BSEC Member States, with the participation of the Secretaries General of the Inter-Parliamentary Organizations which have Observer status in the PABSEC, to be held on 6 March 2018, in Istanbul. The two parts discussed the issues of joint cooperation in the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two Assemblies. Mr. Antufiev extended the invitation to Mr. Hajiyev to participate in the 2018 IPA CIS Plenary Session, to be held in May, in St. Petersburg. During the working breakfast, held on the last day of the 2018 PACE Winter Session, Mr. Wojciech Sawicki, Secretary General of the PACE, Mr. Asaf Hajiyev and Mr. Sergey Antufiev, discussed issues of common interest and the challenges to be addressed in 2018. The sides agreed to organize joint meetings at different levels as well as joint activities, with the aim to strengthen the cooperation among the three Assemblies.
